Nintendo has been met with some criticism the past couple weeks for it’s apparent stance of deleting cloud save data immediately after your Nintendo Switch Online account is expired. As per their official FAQ, cloud data won’t be retained once your subscription has expired.
But, a recent announcement from a Nintendo Representative, as reported by NintendoLife.com, has clarified that the cloud saves will remain for 180 days (or 6 months) after your account is deactivated. They also indicated that the data won’t be available until you resubscribe.
It is a nice customer service feature to retain the data for a period of time. In the incident of a billing error or a financial reason, it is possible for a customer’s account to expire unexpectedly. A grace period allows a better experience for everyone and will likely reduce headaches to Nintendo Support.
