The SEGA Mega Drive (SEGA Genesis in North America) was a phenomenal system, and arguably one of the best things to ever come from SEGA. But what were the games that defined what the system would come to be over the 16-bit generation?

This week, here are five games that I feel made the system what it is, either directly or indirectly. They might not even be the best games on the system, but they made an impact regardless. These SEGA Genesis / SEGA Mega Drive games are important, and that’s why they’re being celebrated here.
