Woodyman’s Backloggery #9 & #10 – Batman: Arkham Asylum & Arkham City

As I sit in my desk chair, sipping my morning coffee trying to figure out how I’m going to write this blog… I’ve come to a realization. I have no idea what I’m doing…

The main purpose of Woodyman’s Backloggery was to keep me honest and to keep me playing through all my old games, in whatever order the gods of random decide.

Getting through the games is fun, but when I come to the blog I hit a roadblock each time. I don’t know how I want to structure these “reviews”. Do I want to do a typical review, a stream of consciousness, or….. what?

I have no idea, so let’s just start writing and see what happens.

Woodyman’s Backloggery #9 and #10

Batman: Arkham Asylym and Batman: Arkham City

So I played the Batman Arkham games completely ass-backwards. I started with Batman: Arkham Origins and beat that. Arkham Origins, for those of you who don’t know Arkham Origins was the third Arkham game made, but it’s a prequel. It’s the only one in the main series not made by Rocksteady. It’s also considered the worst out of the four, by a large majority of people.

After Arkham Origins I played a bit of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City… but never beat them. I borrowed both games at the same time from a friend, but he was moving and I had to return them before he moved.

Then when the fourth game in the series came out, Arkham Knight, I played through and beat that game 100% and had a blast. I had so much fun, when the Return to Arkham collection (an rerelease on Arkham Asylum and Arkham City on current gen consoles) came out, I bought it and immediately added it to my backlog.

What can I say about these games that haven’t been said already? They’re great! The combat is free flowing and fun and only gets better in each game. The stories are fun and full of fan service. The sounds, voices, and environment just scream Batman. My favorite thing about these games is the completionist aspect. Once you beat the game there are numerous Easter eggs, side missions, and challenges to complete… not to mention the seemingly endless Riddler trophies that will have you hunting for hours.

I could gush about these games for pages and pages, but that’s not the point… it’s great…buy it and play it!
