That’s right! Imajin, his girlfriend Rina, and his family debuted today, July 18, 1986, in Japan! But before you go on and tell me that I’m a year off, because that game was released in July 1987, let me explain!
The characters themselves were used to promote Yume Kojo, which was an event similar to a world’s fair, held in 1987. However one year to the day of its opening, the mass promotion of it started. Which means Imajin hit the airwaves for the first time at 2 p.m. Japan Time today! They were featured in ads, as toys, on shirts and other goods for a full year. The game Doki Doki Panic was then released on July 10, 1987, about a week or so before Yume Kojo opened.
Here’s one more thing, have you ever seen or heard anything about the actual event Yume Kojo? Me either! But a few months ago, a extremely rare and unusual book came across my way. This book explained EVERYTHING about the event, it’s planning, promotion, events and the people who worked on it. I have translated it, and turned it into this video. You will see things you’ve never seen before and learn the true meanings behind certain elements of Doki Doki Panic, and by extension, Super Mario Bros. 2. This video is 20 minutes long, so pull up a big dinner, and enjoy!
p.s. I’ll answer any questions anyone has in the comments as well, I’m sure there’ll be some
